Ornamental Woodcarving Class, Rockport, ME
This course was a solo teaching experience. It gave students a solid foundation in traditional skills for carving furniture and architectural elements. Participants developed a confident understanding of the selection, sharpening, and safe handling carving tools, and the cutting properties of wood. Participants expanded on these by carving shells, intricate foliage, and acanthus leaves, which are the central form from which all classical carving stems. Instruction covered the full process of ornamental carving, starting with drawings and ending with surfaces that are finished straight from the chisel.
