ARTISTIC PRACTICE

Although I specialize in ornate woodcarving and wooden object restoration, I am a renaissance artist at heart. I create with various artistic media intertwining several visual disciplines, including charcoal drawings, fine art paintings, photography, and sculpture.

Walnut

This piece is the result of a constant exploration of forms, planes, meanings, details and identity. The work reduces and simplifies both natural and man-made forms, simultaneously representing meticulous and detailed decorative elements as symbols (flowers, animals, insects, etc.). The rhythm of line, relief and movement carved into the wood are not merely represented here. These elements embody the changes in our daily interactions. The marks in the wood made by the carving tools represent life fibers and symbolize the things that can be changed, just waiting for the right moment to come to life. This work also plays a ritualistic role in its own context, presenting both its inner and outer existence in terms of form and symbolism.

Change, Water
2019
Wood

Gabriel A. Pinero (Argentina), Antonio Nieves (Puerto Rico), and I worked as a team in a single large block of wood during the 2019 World Wood Day International Woodcarving Event in Austria. We represented the unifying concept of water as an element that represent the source of connection, of purity, and change. This piece represents our shared attitude that society must coexistence harmoniously with the natural cycles of life.
Over 40 hours went into this project as a team.
The final event was an International Woodcarving show at Stefanielsaan-Congress, Graz, Austria
